Asset Categories

Every asset in Fleetera belongs to a category that classifies what type of equipment it represents — such as "Pump", "Motor", "Generator", or "Sensor". Categories help organize your asset hierarchy and make it easier to filter and search across sites.

Platform vs. tenant categories

Fleetera provides two sources of categories:

Platform categories

Pre-defined categories available to all tenants. These cover common equipment types across a wide range of industries. Platform categories cannot be modified or deleted.

Tenant categories

Custom categories that you create for your organization. Use these when the platform categories do not cover your specific equipment types. Tenant categories are only visible within your organization.

Category fields

Field	Required	Description
Name	Yes	Human-readable label, up to 100 characters. Example: "Centrifugal Pump"
Alias	Yes	Machine-readable identifier in `snake_case` format, up to 50 characters. Must start with a lowercase letter and contain only lowercase letters, numbers, and underscores. Example: `centrifugal_pump`
Description	No	A brief description of the category

Using categories

When creating an asset, the category field is a searchable dropdown. You can type to filter categories by name, alias, or description.

The category is displayed as a badge on each asset in the asset hierarchy tree and on the asset detail page.

The category you assign to an asset is informational — it does not restrict what variables, connectors, or other configurations you can apply to the asset.
