Site Categories

Classify your sites using platform-provided categories organized by industry group.

Every site in Fleetera has a category that classifies the kind of industrial installation it represents. The site category is set during site creation and can be changed later in site configuration.

Platform-provided categories

Fleetera provides 12 site categories organized into five industry groups. These are available to all organizations and cover a broad range of industrial use cases.

Energy and Utilities

Category	Description
Power Generation Plant	Conventional power generation facilities including natural gas, coal, nuclear, and combined-cycle plants.
Renewable Energy Site	Wind farms, solar PV parks, hydroelectric stations, and other renewable energy installations.
Energy Storage Facility	Battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped hydro storage, and other grid-scale energy storage installations.
Substation / Electrical Facility	Electrical substations, switchyards, and power distribution infrastructure.

Manufacturing and Industrial

Category	Description
Manufacturing Facility	Discrete and batch manufacturing plants, assembly lines, machine shops, and production facilities.
Process Plant	Continuous process operations including chemical plants, refineries, food processing, and pharmaceutical production.

Infrastructure

Category	Description
Water and Wastewater Facility	Water treatment plants, wastewater processing facilities, pumping stations, and distribution infrastructure.
Data Center	Server farms, colocation facilities, and edge computing sites with power, cooling, and network infrastructure.

Buildings and Facilities

Category	Description
Commercial Building	Office buildings, retail spaces, hospitals, and other commercial properties with building management systems.
Warehouse / Distribution Center	Logistics hubs, fulfillment centers, and cold storage facilities.

General

Category	Description
Hybrid / Mixed-Use Site	Installations that combine multiple functions or industries — for example, a manufacturing facility with co-located energy generation.
Other	Any industrial site that does not fit the categories above. Use this for custom or specialized installations.

In addition to the platform-provided categories, you can create custom site categories specific to your organization. Navigate to Settings > Site Categories to view all available categories and create new ones.

Custom categories are visible only within your organization. They follow the same structure as platform categories: a name, alias, and optional description.

How site categories are used

Site Settings — the category is chosen when you create a site and is shown and editable in the site's General settings.
Organization — categories help your team identify and group sites by industry or function.

Choosing the right category

Select the category that best describes the primary function of your site. For installations that span multiple industries — such as a manufacturing facility with on-site power generation — use Hybrid / Mixed-Use Site. If none of the predefined categories fit, select Other or create a custom category.

The site category is informational and does not restrict which assets, connectors, or templates you can use within the site. You can assign any asset category to any site regardless of its site category.

Managing site categories

To manage site categories, navigate to Settings > Site Categories. From this page you can:

View platform categories — browse all 12 built-in categories organized by group
Create custom categories — add categories specific to your organization's needs
Edit custom categories — update the name, alias, or description of your custom categories
Delete custom categories — remove custom categories that are no longer needed

Platform-provided categories cannot be modified or deleted. They are available to all organizations and provide a consistent baseline classification.
